What is so special about alpaca?

Alpaca is a relatively unknown specialty fibers which is extremely rare and of excellent quality. Alpaca fiber is stronger, lighter and more resilient than wool. Finer than cashmere and of course, it is 100% natural and good for the environment. Unlike wool, harsh toxic chemicals are not needed to process alpaca as it does not contain lanolin oils. Alpaca fiber comes naturally in 22 different colors! It also dyes very well, holds its cool and blends superbly with other fibers. Alpaca is naturally hypoallergenic. It lacks the the lanolin and other oils seen in other fleeces. It's fineness will be noticed as you don't feel the scratchiness that is typically felt with wool.

Where are Pearth products made?

Pearth blankets and apparel are handmade by the Indigenous Artisans in a small town within the Andean highlands of northern Ecuador.

Are the alpacas harmed in order to make Pearth products?

Absolutely NOT! We are animal lovers! The great thing about alpacas is that there is no need to harm them to obtain their valuable fleece. Each late spring, as it begins to get hot, alpacas are shorn for their annual 'clip'. Alpacas are a domesticated animal. The annual shearing is completely natural for them and the animals are notably more comfortable after this annual 'hair cut'.

Are Pearth products made from baby alpacas?

Baby alpaca is an industry term, which relates to the grade of fineness. There are several grades of alpaca fiber. The grade of fineness is not related to the age of the animal from which the fleece came. Through selective breeding, there are adult alpacas that continually produce fiber which grades at the level of 'baby'. Alpaca farmers strive to produce this quality fiber as it is very fine and feels wonderful in blankets or garments worn next to the skin.

What is the mix of fibers in a Pearth Blanket?

In order to maintain the integrity and to maximize the longevity of the alpaca fibers, Pearth Blankets are handmade from 80% Suri alpaca fleece and 20% high quality polycotton blend. There are two different types of alpaca, Suri and Huacaya. Prized for their longer and silkier fibers, Suri alpaca, are estimated to make up only 20% of the population. Suri is most rare and most treasured!

What are the recommended care instructions to wash a Pearth Blanket?

First, think of your alpaca blanket as fine yet strong hair, which is what it essentially is! You must take extra precaution when cleaning any natural animal fiber product. Due to the fragile nature of the alpaca fibers, Dry Clean is highly recommended. However, if you prefer to wash your Pearth Blanket, please wash  in cold water and hang to dry. We do not recommend laundry or dishwashing soap as it too harsh for some fibers. Please use baby or a mild soap. After your blanket is dry, use a soft bristle brush to soften the fibers back to their original condition. With proper care, your Pearth Blanket will give you many years of cozy enjoyment and you too will have an alpaca heirloom!

Why is my Pearth Blanket shedding?

It is very common for natural fiber products to shed within the first couple weeks of use. If this occurs, we recommend using a soft bristle brush (typically purchased for cleaning) to pull out any loose fibers from the blanket. This is a great tool to keep on hand as it is perfect for keeping your blanket in top shape after heavy usage. Please let us know if you have any questions!
