Pearth Hats are handmade from Genuine Toquilla Straw, only found in Ecuador. The lightness and flexibility of this fiber has made these hats extremely popular and in such great demand. They are a symbol for Ecuador, being a fusion of nature, manual dexterity of Ecuadorians, and their culture.
The weaving of our Pearth Hats is completely manual. It is actually a 30 step process starting with only a few pieces of straw and subsequently adding more. The weaving is made by artisans on the countryside, the usual place of work being their homes. It is not only a means to earn an income, but in most cases it is a long family heritage, popular tradition, part of them and their lives.
With the purchase of a Pearth Hat you are helping to keep this ancient tradition alive! You are supporting the artisans and their families that have passed down this beautiful tradition from many generations.
FUN FACT! Hats which are truly made from Genuine Toquilla Straw are known as "Panama Hat" but did you know that Panama hats are made in Ecuador and not in Panama? - - - So WHY is it called a Panama Hat? Well, during the construction of the Panama Canal there was a great demand for toquilla straw hats from Ecuador because of their amazing qualities to protect from the sun. The popularity of the hats became internationally known in Panama and therefore people began to call it “Panama Hat” even though the place of origin is Ecuador.
Caring for your Pearth Hat: If you happen to get a kink, don't get bent out of shape! Simply use a low heat iron with a towel in between, or go natural and lie it in the sun.
